Date:February 5, 2025
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit begins at the sinner’s conversion and continues throughout the believer’s life, giving them the assurance of their eternal salvation, and enabling them to live the victorious Christian life during their days on this earth.

  • The Holy Spirit fills believers with God’s love.
  • The Holy Spirit produces holiness in the believer’s life
  • The Holy Spirit helps believers understand the truth of the gospel.
  • The Holy Spirit intercedes on believers’ behalf when they are in need.
  • The Holy Spirit empowers the believer to be God’s witnesses.
  • The Holy Spirit guides the believer into developing a Christian worldview.

Tonight at 6:00 PM, we will continue our study of Paul’s incredible letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 8:1-17 under the heading, “The Indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit.”

As you prayerfully prepare for this very in-depth study of Romans, consider these three verses:

  • Romans 8:7-9: “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you”.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19–20: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”.
  • John 14:17: “He lives with you and will be in you”.

Thanks for spreading the gospel by sharing these sermon study guides with your family and friends.

The Just Shall Live by Faith
“The Indwelling Presence of The Holy Spirit”
Romans 8:1-17

The Eight Essential Elements of Genuine Salvation:

  • The HOLINESS of God – only God is holy and worthy of our praise and honor.
  • The SINFULNESS of man – man is not a sinner because he sins; man sins because he is a sinner by nature and by choice.
  • The REDEMPTION of Christ – God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son to redeem man from the penalty of sin and to enable us with the power over evil.
  • The REPENTANCE of man – to agree with God about our sinful nature, repent from it, and call upon the grace of God for His forgiveness.
  • The CALL to SACRIFICE – to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and be willing to give up our lives, if necessary, to get the gospel to those who have yet to hear.
  • The JOY of full SURRENDER – to die to ourselves, our goals, our dreams, our desires, and our plans, and to allow the Lord Jesus Christ to live His life through us.

Three results of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit:

1. A New Law Operating Within Us – Verses 1-4

  • “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made us free from the law of sin and death.”
  • There is no more condemnation for sin
    • Romans 8:1 –
    • Romans 8:39 –
    • Those two verses give the true believer in Jesus Christ absolute security!
    • That is what it means to be born again.
  • There is no more control by sin
    • Romans 7:19 –
    • Romans 8:2 –
    • The true believer has the power to say NO to sin!
  • There should be no more continuance in sin
    • Romans 8:4 –
    • The “life of Christ” cannot be reproduced by us, but it can be reproduced within us if we do not walk after the flesh but after the Spirit.

2. A New Lord of Our Life – Verses. 5-13

  • “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit!”

When a person is truly born again, he is sealed by the Holy Spirit at that moment, and the Holy Spirit begins the process of cleaning the temple, and making it a holy habitation for His presence.

  • He begins with the mind – vss. 5-7 because the carnal mind is at enmity with God – always contrary to God’s desires.
  • The second place is our heart – which is the seat of our motives – vss. 8-9 – changing us from being motivated by the desires of the flesh to being motivated by the Spirit.
  • The third place is our physical body – vss. 10-13. The believer must present his body to the Lord as a living sacrifice unto God, and once God has control, the Holy Spirit turns the believer’s body into a holy temple and fills it with His presence.

3. A New Life – Verses 14-39

  • “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God!”
    • There is the Spirit of acceptance – vs. 14
    • There is the Spirit of adoption – vs. 15
    • There is the Spirit of assurance – vs. 16
