“The Call of Moses” – Part Two
Exodus 3:1-22
The clearest “type” (visual demonstration) of God’s plan for our redemption is in the call of Moses to go to Egypt and to prove himself as the deliverer of God’s people.
- God called Noah to be the preserver of the Seed.
- God called Abraham to be the father of a new nation of people – Israel – God’s “chosen” people!
- God called Moses to be the deliverer of His people from their bondage to slavery – a perfect picture of the Person and work of Jesus Christ as our Savior, whom God sent to deliver us from our sins.
- Just as God sent Moses to answer the cry of His people, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life!” (John 3:16)
Review of the first four steps in God’s call to Moses:
- The call of Preservation – God miraculously spared Moses’ life from Pharaoh’s edict to kill all male babies.
- Rather than being destroyed, God arranged for Moses to be adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, nursed by Moses’ mother, and educated at Pharaoh’s expense.
- The call of Separation – When Moses became a man, he was offered his rightful position as the King of Egypt.
- Moses deliberately refused to separate himself from the pleasures of the flesh, choosing rather to be treated like his own people.
- Moses was forced to separate himself from the power of the flesh, having killed an Egyptian in his efforts to do the work of God in the flesh.
- The call of Desperation – Moses fled to Midian, and after many days of travel, sat down by a well.
- God sent His “ministering angels” to comfort him, and a godly family to embrace him.
- For the next 40 years, God trained Moses to lead His people by learning how to shepherd sheep.
- During this process, God brought Moses to the end of himself so that God could use him.
- The call of Revelation – As Moses was going about his chores as a shepherd, God revealed Himself to Moses through a “burning bush”, yet the bush was not burned. In that dramatic revelation, Moses saw a vision of:
- The grace of God – God’s holiness had the power to destroy all sin, but God’s grace had the power to save the sinner.
- The glory of God – God’s presence had always been “in the midst” of His people; even within their suffering.
- The holiness of God – God’s work must be done in God’s way to achieve God’s purpose, which must always be for His glory!
The final three steps in God’s call to Moses:
- The call of Destination – Exodus 3:4-10
- Verse 10 – “I will send thee unto Pharaoh that thou mayest bring forth my people out of Egypt!”
- God called Moses’ name twice, letting him know of the urgency of His call.
- God revealed His name as “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob!”
- In verse 5, God revealed His holiness – wherever God is, He is holy – even in the desert.
- In verse 6, God revealed His honor – He was a covenant-keeping God.
- In verses 7-8, God revealed His compassion – He had heard the cry of His people, and He had “come down” to deliver them out of their slavery and into the Promised Land.
- In verse 9-10, God revealed His purpose – He was going to send Moses as His VOICE to His people and to Pharaoh.
- God was going to use Moses to establish the pattern for the redemption of man.
- The call of Reservation – Exodus 3:11-22
- Verse 11 – “Moses said unto God, who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
- Forty years earlier, Moses would have thought he was God’s perfect choice to deliver His people from bondage.
- But after 40 years of chasing sheep, he didn’t have that same prideful attitude – he was humble, broken, contrite – the perfect characteristics of a true servant of God.
- Moses asked, “Who am I?” – God did not answer his question, but he said, “I will certainly be with you!”
- Moses asked, “Who are You” – God revealed Himself as “I Am Who I Am” – the ever-present, everlasting God, who has no equal.
- When Moses used that name in front of the Israelites, it would remind them of the God of their fathers, and of His covenant with them – proving that Moses was the one sent by God to be their deliverer!
- When Jesus used that name to identify Himself as the “Great I Am”, He was proving Himself as the Savior God has sent to be our Deliverer.
- God assured Moses that His people would follow him out of Egypt.
- God assured Moses that Pharaoh would eventually let His people go.
- God assured Moses that “He would” accomplish what “He had” ordained. (Isaiah 46:10)
- The call of Dedication – Exodus 4:20
- “Moses took his wife and his sons and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt!”
Fifteen hundred years later, God sent Jesus to deliver His chosen people from their slavery to the sins of the world.
- “To bring us up out of that land” – the world.
- “To bring us into a good land” – that intimate, personal relationship with God that is eternal.
- The power He displayed to prove Himself was manifested in His compassion for those in bondage.
- The sacrifice He made to buy our freedom was His own precious blood.
- Those He redeemed must walk through the desert of this life BY FAITH, to be sanctified from the world, until that day He calls us to cross over Jordan, either through death or the rapture, and we enter into that everlasting fellowship with God.
