Inspiration—God’s Mercy                                      Scripture Reading—Titus 3:1-7

  1. In Titus 3:1-2, Paul told these “new Christians: to be:
    • Subject to rules
    • Ready for every good work
    • Speak evil of no one
    • To be no brawlers
    • To be gentle
    • To show humility to all men
  1. In Titus 3:3, Paul said even Christians were, at one time:
    • Foolish
    • Disobedient
    • Deceived
    • Serving diverse lusts and pleasures
    • Living in malice and envy
    • Hating one another
  1. What two things changed the Christian’s heart and life? (Verse 4)
    • The kindness and the love of God our Savior!

4. What did God do? (Verse 5)

    • “He saved us!”
    • “Not by works of righteousness which we have done,”
    • “But according to His mercy he saved us,”
    • “By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost!”
  1. We are now (Verse 7)
    • Justified by His grace, and
    • Heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Application—Repent

  1. List those persons over you who are:
    • Rulers—those with God-given responsibility for you
    • Authority—those with delegated responsibility for you
  1. What evidence is there in your life (as you read Titus 3:3) that you have not been subject to those in authority over you?
  2. When we read Ephesians 5:26 and we see that the term Washing of regeneration is defined as cleansing or making one holy.
  3. When we read Romans 12:2, we define the term Renewing of the Holy Spirit as the change that is made by giving oneself over to God and being in His Word so you can constantly be refreshed by the Holy Spirit.
  4. Read Titus 3:4-7 and underscore these words that brought YOU to salvation:
    • His kindness and love (verse 4)
    • His mercy (verse 5)
    • His grace (verse 7)
  1. Personalize Titus 3:4-7 and begin reading it daily:

But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward me appeared, not by works of righteousness which I have done, but according to His mercy He saved me, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on me abundantly through Jesus Christ my Savior,  that having been justified by His grace I should become heir according to the hope of eternal life.”

Application—Return

  1. Pray, asking God to give you the grace to submit to those in authority over you.

PSALM 116

“I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

The pains of death surrounded me, and the pangs of Sheol laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow. Then I called upon the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!” Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me. Return to your rest, O my soul, For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I believed; therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.” I said in my haste, “All men are liars.” What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. O Lord, truly I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; You have loosed my bonds.
I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call upon the name of the Lord.

I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people, in the courts of the Lord’s house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!”
