Nisan 15 – sunset Thursday – sunset Friday
-
- Passover was a High Sabbath, and personal activity was limited, which meant nothing could be done on Thursday to improve the hasty burial of Jesus’ body.
- Friday began at Sunset on Thursday, but still, nothing could be done, for nothing could be purchased because the shops would not be open until the next morning.
- According to Luke 23:55-56, on Friday, Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, “prepared spices and ointments,” but they could not take them to the tomb that day because the regular Sabbath began at sunset Friday and they would not have had time to go and buy the spices, prepare the spices, get permission to open the tomb, have someone open the tomb, anoint Jesus’ body and return to their homes by sunset, which began the regular Sabbath.
- God used the timing and the restrictions of the two Sabbaths; Passover, the High Sabbath, and Saturday, the regular Sabbath, to keep even those who loved Jesus away from His tomb until the right time for His resurrection – for He had to be in the heart of the earth, three days and three nights!
