The Just Shall Live by Faith

“Adam and Christ: The Two Focal Points of Human History “ Romans 5:12-21

Date:November 17, 2024
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

This Sunday at 6:00 PM, we will continue our in-depth study of Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 5:12-21 under the heading God’s Provision for Our Salvation, – “The Two Focal Points of Human History.”

Think about the glorious truth of this passage:

For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.”

  • Sin entered into the world by one man whose name was Adam.
    • Genesis 1:17 –
    • Ezekiel 18:20 –

    • Romans 3:23 –
    • Romans 6:23 –
    • 1 John 1:8 –
    • 1 John 5:19 –
  • God’s sentence of death was passed to all men.

    • Physical death – separation from the living
    • Eternal death – the eternal state of the first two

2. The Egress of Sin and Death Through Christ:The Victory – Romans 5:15 19

  • Adam’s sin brought eternal death
  • God’s Gift brought eternal life
  • Adam’s sin made us unacceptable to God
  • God’s Gift of grace made us acceptable to God
  • Adam’s sin brought the reign of death
  • God’s gift of grace brought us the reign of life
  • Adam’s sin brought destruction to all men
  • God’s gift brought abundant life to all men
  • Adam’s disobedience made many sinners
  • Christ’s obedience made many righteous

Adam and Christ are presented as two figureheads of the human race:

  • Adam stands as the head of the human race as the first to bring sin and death to mankind.
  • Christ stands as the head of the human race as the first to:
    • Live a perfectly, sinless life
    • Conquer sin, death and the grave

We all enter ADAM’S family simply by being alive.

  • And all that belongs to Adam becomes ours, including eternal death.

We can enter CHRIST’S family by being born again.

  • And all that belongs to Jesus Christ becomes ours, including everlasting life.
