Date:February 2, 2025
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

This Sunday at 6:00 PM, we will continue our study of Paul’s incredible letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 8:14-27 under the heading, “The Victorious Christian Life.”
As you prayerfully prepare for this very in-depth study of Romans on the believer’s “Everlasting Sonship,” meditate on this precious verse from John 1:12-13: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

The Just Shall Live by Faith
“Everlasting Sonship”
Romans 8:14-27

When children finally understand what their parents did to get them to “that place” in their lives, there is an awesome sense of gratitude and thanksgiving between them.

  • Their relationship is no longer based upon the authority of the parent and the obedience of the child; rather, it is based on an indescribable intimacy of the heart.
  • The Apostle Paul refers to this as an everlasting fellowship.
  • To be called a child of God, a person must be born again by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • To be called a son of God, a person must be adopted by God the Father.

“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on His name, which were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God!”
(John 1:12-13)

When a believer is “adopted,” he receives the “Spirit of adoption” – the awareness of his new relationship with God the Father.

  • On the day of our redemption, believers will receive their full adoption as our bodies are changed into His likeness.
  • From that day and forever more, every believer will be the everlasting son of God!

SEVEN ASPECTS OF THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FROM ROMANS 8:

  1. The Holy Spirit frees us from sin and death – Vs. 2-3
  2. The Holy Spirit enables us to fulfill the law of God because He gives us the righteousness of God – Vs. 4
  3. The Holy Spirit changes our nature from the inside out, which is called regeneration – Vs. 5-11
  4. The Holy Spirit empowers us to claim the victory God has already given us – Vs. 12-13.
  5. The Holy Spirit guarantees that we will be glorified with the Lord one day – Vs. 17 – 25
  6. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us – Vs. 26-27
  7. The Holy Spirit confirms our adoption – Vs. 14-27

  1. Our Adoption into The Family of God – Vs. 14-17 – Vs. 14 – “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.”

  • To be adopted into the family of God, the sinner must be born again, filled, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
  • According to Genesis 2:7, God “formed man from the dust of the ground” and “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,” giving him a spirit and a soul.
  • In Galatians 5:17 and Romans 8:7-9, the Apostle Paul said that the sinful spirit of man is at odds with the Holy Spirit of God.
  • For the unsaved man to do things that please God, he first must be born again and then filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit, i.e., full conversion, for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.
  • Three characteristics of those who are adopted as sons in the family of God:
  • They are led by the Spirit – Vs. 14 – While the principles of God’s guidance are different today, His leadership is still available to those with the heart to observe and the will to obey.
  • They are loved by the Father – Vs. 15 – “ABBA” is the Aramaic word from which we get our English word, “Papa” – a word of endearment, tenderness, and compassion, not a position. The term “father” is a translation from the Greek or Latin word “Pateer” – a word of devotion or love.
  • They are lifted by the Son – Vs. 17 – “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ, so if we suffer with Him, we may be glorified together.”
  1. Our Adaption into The Family of God – Vs. 23 – “Even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.”

    • There is the groaning of creation – Vs. 18-22
      • Eagerly waiting for deliverance from the curse.
    • There is the groaning of Christians – Vs. 23-25
      • Eagerly waiting for the redemption of our bodies.
    • There is the groaning of the children – Vs. 26-27
      • Trusting the Holy Spirit to guide our prayers according to the will of God.

Very soon, this groaning will give way to glory, as we who have been adopted into the family of God are fully adapted to sit beside the Savior in heaven and glorify the Father for all eternity.
