The Just Shall Live by Faith

“Holiness and Sanctification: The Believer’s Position in Christ” Romans 6:1-10

Date:December 1, 2024
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

This Sunday at 6:00 PM, we will continue our in-depth study of Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 6:1-10 under the heading “The Believer’s Position in Christ.”

Think about the glorious truth of this passage: Romans 6:11-13

“Likewise, you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.  And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

“Holiness and Sanctification”
“The Believer’s Position in Christ”
Romans 6:1-10

Question: Does being “saved by grace” give the believer absolute “freedom” to continue to sin?

Answer: “God forbid! How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”

Paul’s exhortation was for the believer to know his/her glorious position in Christ – or as a Christian!

That knowledge alone should so revolutionize his/her life that it would give them the power to resist temptation and sin’s appeal.

1. Position Number One: The Believer Is Immersed Into Christ – Romans 5:3-5

Identifying with Christ’s death.

Identifying with Christ’s resurrection.

Who was raised by God’s power.

That we should walk in the newness of life.

And be raised to everlasting life.

2.  Position Number Two: The Believer Is Crucified with Christ – Romans 5:6-7

To destroy the body of sin (the old man)

To enable him to renounce sin

3.  Position Number Three: The Believer Lives with Christ – Now and Forever – Romans 5:8-10

Christ has conquered death – once and for all and forever!

Christ now lives unto God – forever!

Conclusion: Romans 6:11-13

The true believer does not continue to live in sin, but rather he conquers and triumphs over sin:

He considers himself as being dead to sin but alive to God – vs 11

He resists sin – not allowing it to dwell in his mind, or obey its desires.

He yields himself unto God, and the members of his body as instruments of God’s righteousness.
