“Paul’s Passion for His People” – Part 2 Romans 9:1-10:21

Introduction:

One of the significant LIES that has infiltrated the evangelical Church today is Replacement Theology – that because the Jewish nation rejected Jesus as the God-sent Messiah, they forfeited their right to be the people of God. God replaced the Jews with the Church.  Those who believe this damnable heresy consider modern day Israel to be an accident of history. They deny that God has any special plans for the current Jewish people in the end times; that the regathering of the Jews and the re-establishment of the nation of Israel has no spiritual significance.

However, according to the Bible:

  • God chose the Hebrews to be His witness to the world.
  • Through them, God gave the world the Bible.
  • Through them, God gave the world the Messiah.
  • God has promised that He will save a great remnant of them.
  • God has promised that through that remnant, He will bless all the nations of the world during Jesus’ millennial reign.

Satan is determined to destroy every Jew on planet Earth so that God cannot keep His promises to them. However, Satan knows that a great remnant of the Jewish people is going to live to the end of the Tribulation. They will be brought to the end of themselves, and when Jesus appears:

  • “They will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn” (Zechariah 12:10)
  • They will receive Yeshua as their Messiah and cry, “Baruch Haba B’Shem Adonai.” (Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!)

What a glorious day that will be. What glory will it bring to the name of God?  Meanwhile, as we await that day, let us meet each new day with the cry of “Maranatha! Maranatha! Come quickly, Lord Jesus!”

Sunday night at 6:00 PM, we will address this issue from Paul’s letter to the Romans as we look at “Paul’s Passion for His people.” As you prayerfully prepare for this very timely study, consider this passage from Romans 11:1: “I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.”

The Just Shall Live by Faith
“Paul’s Passion for His People” – Part 2
Romans 9:1-10:21

In Romans 9-11, Paul addresses one of the major theological questions of the Christian faith:

Is God through with the nation of Israel?

Yes, the Jews were God’s chosen people with a unique and special place in God’s plan for man’s redemption:

  • They were to serve as the channel through which the Savior would come.
  • But, when God sent Jesus into the world as the agent of that redemption, the Jews rejected Him.
  • Did God’s promise fail? Did His Word fail? No!
  • The True Israel is not made up of members of any particular race or nation.
  • The True Israel includes all the children of the PROMISE, and a child of the promise is a person who puts their faith in the PROMISE of God – the Savior, Jesus Christ!

1.  The Privileges of Israel – Romans 9:1-5

  • They were Israelitesyisra – means to strive or to struggle – el – is the name of God. The name Israel describes those who struggle or strive with God.
  • They had the adoption – “Israel is My Son, My firstborn.” (Ex. 4:22) When was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt!” (Hos. 11:1)
  • They had the glory – they were the only people to have seen the Shekinah glory of God.
  • They had the covenants – God entered into personal covenants with Abraham, Moses, and David – He would be their God, and they would be His people.
  • They had the law – not just the Ten Commandments, but the whole counsel of God in the language of man.
  • They had true worship – they had the Tabernacle, the Temple, the Ordinances, the Priests, and the Prophets.
  • They had the promises – they had the verbal and written promises of God.
  • They had the fathers – they had the spiritual giants – the patriarchs of the faith – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, etc.
  • They had the MESSIAH – the Jews had the privilege of seeing the Messiah – they “beheld His glory; the glory of the only begotten of the Father.”

2. The Rejection of Israel – 9:14-33

  • God has a right to ELECT whom He wills –
  • His right is as the POTTER over the CLAY.
  • God has a right to SAVE whom He wills –
    • From the NATION of Israel, and from nations OTHER than Israel, to fulfill His PROMISE to Israel
  • God will save those who do not pursue righteousness by their WORKS but by their FAITH.
  • God will save those who do not pursue redemptions by keeping the LAW but by their FAITH in Jesus Christ.

3. The Gospel Is Universal – 10:12-21

  • The Lord treats all men ALIKE.
  • All men are saved by the same PROMISE.
  • No one can be saved apart from hearing God’s WORD – the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ.
  • The “nation” of Israel was not saved:
    • Not because they did not HEAR the Word.
    • Not because they did not KNOW the Word.
    • But because they did not RECEIVE AND BELIEVE the Word.
