The Just Shall Live by Faith

“The Behavior of a True Believer” Pt1 Romans 12:3-21

Date:March 2, 2025
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

In Romans 12:1-2, the Apostle Paul said those who have been saved by the grace of God WOULD NOT conform themselves to the evil systems of the evil world, but rather they would:

  • Be transformed by the renewing of their mind, through the consistent and persistent study of the Holy Scriptures.
  • Be continuously filled with the Holy Spirit, which means they were to use the gifts God had given them to go into that deceitful culture and confront it with the truth of God’s Word.
  • Be encouragers to their fellow believers by standing firm in their faith, and witnesses to the unbelievers by consistently living out their faith before them.

Paul said their goal was to equip themselves with the word of God, so that God could use them to make a difference in the season of history in which they lived.

Sunday evening at 6:00 PM, we will continue our study of Paul’s incredible letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 12:3-21, under the heading: “The Behavior of a True Believer.”

The Just Shall Live by Faith
“The Behavior of a True Believer”
Part One
Romans 12:3-21

  • To the unbeliever, or even to the carnal believer, religion is an activity to be practiced – it is a performance of acts of self-righteousness.
  • To the true believer, Christianity is a new way to live, based upon a new relationship with God.
    • The Hebrew word “walk” means “way of life.”
    • I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:1-3
    • We behave what we truly believe – the rest is just religion.

In Romans 12:3-21, the Apostle Paul concluded:

  • The believer’s response to the gift of God’s grace will be:
    • To worship Him – which means a full surrender unto His Lordship!
    • To witness Him – which means to live out that which He has indwelt in us.

1. The Believer and Himself – vs 3-8

  • Think accurately – we were all saved by the grace of God.
  • Act spiritually – discover and use the spiritual gift God has entrusted to us.
  • Love sincerely – without any shadow of hypocrisy.
  • Serve fervently – with a sense of urgency.
  • Endure patiently – every trial will be used for our good and for God’s glory.
  • Give unselfishly – have an open heart toward fellow believers who are in need.

2. The Believer and Other Believers – vs 9-13

  • Love sincerely – without any shadow of hypocrisy.
  • Serve fervently – with a sense of urgency.
  • Endure patiently – every trial will be used for our good and for God’s glory.
  • Give unselfishly – have an open heart toward fellow believers who are in need.

3. The Believer and Unbelievers – vs 14-21

  • Witness genuinely – “Bless those who persecute you.”
  • Walk honestly – not snobbish or conceited, but rather in an attitude of gratitude for what God has done for us.
  • Live peaceably – in so far as it is possible, for some people LIVE on their anger against others.

“We’re here to be worshippers first and workers second.
God meant that a convert should learn to be a worshipper,
and after that he can learn to be a worker.
The work done by a worshipper will have eternity in it!”
