The Just Shall Live by Faith

"The Victorious Christian Life” Romans 8:1-5

Date:January 26, 2025
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

We will continue our study of Paul’s incredible letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 8:1-5 under the heading, “The Victorious Christian Life.”

Meditate on this wonderful truth as found in Romans 8:1-5:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh; God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”

The Just Shall Live by Faith
“The Victorious Christian Life”
Romans 8:1-5

The Apostle Paul said there is no condemnation for those:

  • Who are in Christ Jesus (truly born again) who
  • Who walk not after the flesh (worldly desires) but
  • Who walk after the Spirit (led by the Holy Spirit)

The term “no condemnation” means, the true believer can face the future in faith and not in fear, because he will never face any condemnation from God, simply because of his faith IN Jesus Christ!

  1. The Believer’s Position in Christ – Vs. 1 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”

When a person is truly born again, he is placed in Christ Jesus. And, since Jesus Christ has already been judged for the believer’s sins, he will not receive any further condemnation from God the Father on the Day of Judgment.

  • The believer has complete and eternal security.
  • The believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of his redemption.

When we place our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, God takes our faith and considers it as though:

  • We lived with Christ when He was on earth.
  • We died with Christ when He died on the cross.
  • We were raised from the dead on the day of His resurrection.
  • We are already glorified as Jesus is now glorified with the Father in heaven.
  1. The Believer’s Possession in Christ – Vs. 2-5 – “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death!”

When we were born physically, we inherited our physical nature from our father, Adam.

  • The Bible often refers to this as the “flesh” or as “carnality” – the root of our desire to sin.

When we were born again by the Holy Spirit, we received a new nature; the very presence of God Himself.

  • He gives us the victory over sin, death and the grave, which is the definition of the Victorious Christian Life.

But the infusion of the new nature does not automatically destroy the old nature, which is why; even Christians will still struggle with sin until the day of our redemption.

  • To have our Lord’s VICTORY over sin we must:
    • Admit our own weaknesses over sin
    • Yield totally to His power, and take
    • Trust in Jesus Christ, alone! (1 Jn. 4:4)
  1. The Believer’s Provision in Christ – Vs. 1 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus!”

   No Condemnation means:

  • We will never face the Father’s wrath because of our struggle with sin.
  • God will not punish us because of our struggle with sin.
  • God will not reject us because of our struggle with sin.
