The Just Shall Live by Faith

“The Wrath of God Revealed” Romans 1:18

Date:September 15, 2024
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

The term “wrath” is defined as “the emotional response to perceived wrong and injustice.” When humans express wrath, it always comes out as “anger, indignation, vexation, or the visible expression of one’s irritation.” However, when God speaks His wrath, it is as holy as His love, grace, and mercy.

Divine wrath is a crucial component of God’s perfect holiness. Without His wrath, there can be no holiness. Therefore, biblically, divine wrath is God’s correct and righteous response to sin. In a positive light, wrath, in perfect harmony with all his divine attributes, is God’s holy action of retributive justice towards those persons whose actions deserve eternal condemnation.

This Sunday at 6:00 PM, we are excited to continue our in-depth study of Paul’s letter to the Romans, focusing on the theme, ‘The Just Shall Live by Faith.” In this sermon, Paul clarifies, ‘The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”

The Just Shall Live by Faith # 6
“The Wrath of God Revealed”
Romans 1:18

Wayne J. Edwards, Pastor

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” Romans 1:18 NKJV

The two major flaws in most gospel presentations today:

  • The gospel presentation is incomplete because it fails to address the issue of God’s wrath.
  • The person being witnessed to may conclude that by agreeing to that incomplete presentation of the gospel, they are saved and assured of their home in heaven.
  • The formal theological term for that person is “unregenerate,” – full fledged members of the local church they attend, but they have never been born again by the Holy Spirit.
  • Thom Rainer of the SBC said this characterizes at least 50% of all church members. Other surveys conclude that it could be as high as 90%

God is a God of wrath at the same time He is a God of love.

  • Every person is born under that condemnation of God’s wrath until it is satisfied by their expressed faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Paul reveals six features of the wrath of God:

  • God’s wrath is DIFFERENT from man’s anger – it is DIVINE.
  • God’s wrath is CONSTANTLY being revealed.
  • God’s wrath is REVEALED FROM HEAVEN.
  • God’s wrath is revealed AGAINST SIN.
  • God’s wrath is revealed to ALL WHO ARE SINNERS.
  • God’s wrath is revealed to those who SUPPRESS THE TRUTH by their sin.

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior, Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
(Titus 2:11-14)
