Let’s begin our journey with Jesus as He comes into the city of Jerusalem for the last time. We will walk with Him until we are standing at the foot of the cross with John and Mary, Jesus’ mother, kneeling before the Lamb of God, whose sacrificial death paid the eternal penalty for our sins.
As we begin this journey, we need to understand several important issues:
-
- Matthew, Mark, and Luke wrote their gospel based upon Jewish Time, “sunset to sunset,” meaning each day began and ended at 6:00 PM, as God established it in Genesis; “The evening and the morning were the first day.”
- John wrote his gospel much later than the other three, and he used Roman Time, “midnight to midnight,” 12 hours to high noon and, then 12 more hours from noon to midnight, as we count our days today.
- This has caused a lot of difficulty in establishing the exact timing of the accounts of the events of this last week of Jesus’ life, as most pastors will not take the time to explain such intricate details to their congregations.
- But, when you look at the event from the perspective of biblical prophecy, rather than just the next thing that happened to Jesus on the way to the cross, and from the perspective of the Jewish calendar that had to be followed to the letter, for all the prophecies to be fulfilled, all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place as they should.
- No, it doesn’t fit the religious model – God never intended it to. But the truth is here for all who will take the time to seek it, and I pray you will allow this book to draw you to the Scriptures and that you will allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth.
