At sunset, it became Tuesday, the 12th of Nisan, two days before the observance of Passover.
-
- Matthew, Mark, and Luke said the religious leaders were getting anxious about killing Jesus, but they didn’t want to do it during the Passover, lest the people rise up against them.
- But the religious leaders did not understand that God was working according to His plan and not their schedule.
- In Acts 2:23, speaking to the Jews, Peter said Jesus was “delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God and was nailed to the cross by the hands of godless men who put Him to death.”
- The Jews carried out the dastardly deed, but it was according to God’s divine plan and timetable.
The next morning, Jesus sent two disciples into the city to find and prepare the room for them to observe the Passover meal, and Mark used this event to again confirm the Lord’s omniscience and sovereignty in the way Jesus gave these men their assignment.
-
- Jesus told them: “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” The disciples went to the city and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.”
Most likely, this was a second-floor room in Mark’s mother’s house, where the disciples stayed when they were in Jerusalem and the place to which they returned after the Lord’s ascension, to wait upon the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The room believed to have been the “Upper Room” is still there today and is visited by tourists from around the world.
