Now, starting at Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified, let’s trace the events and the actions of the people up to Jesus’ ascension into glory.
-
- If you have not been convinced already, I pray, by seeing the chronology of these events from the very Scriptures, you too will also conclude, Jesus is Lord! Let’s begin:
Nisan 13 – Wednesday – Noon to sunset:
-
- During the last three hours of Jesus’ death, creation itself began to convulse at the death of its Creator, as darkness covered the whole earth for those three hours.
- Secular historians documented an eclipse of the sun from 3-6 pm on this date in AD33.
- When Jesus gave up His spirit, a massive earthquake occurred; graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints were raised back to life and returned to their families.
- The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, proving His death had broken down the barrier between God and man.
- The crowd around the cross began to weep and mourn with remorse over what they had done, and the Roman Soldier cried out, “Truly, this was the Son of God.”
Normally, the bodies of those crucified were left on the cross, but Pilate gave Joseph of Arimathea permission to bury Jesus in his own tomb.
-
- Nicodemus helped Joseph remove Jesus’ body from the cross, wrap it in fine linen, and place it in the tomb Joseph had prepared for himself and his family.
- The women watched where the body of Jesus was buried and then returned to their homes for the beginning of Passover.
- Remembering what Jesus had said about being raised from the dead, the Jewish Religious leaders insisted Pilate seal the tomb and place guards in front of it to prevent the disciples from taking the body and claiming Jesus had resurrected.
