The Just Shall Live by Faith

“The Behavior of a True Believer” Pt 2 Romans 13:1-14

Date:March 5, 2025
Author: Wayne J. Edwards

Introduction:

The unbelieving world wants to see if we truly are redeemed, and if they are convinced by what they see, they might also be convicted of what they are missing, and ask us for the reason for the hope that is within us.

Christians are to be the conscience of a nation, not by our stands against sin so much as our submission to our Savior, and our love for each other. Those are the two most convincing things we can ever do.

Wednesday night at 6:00 PM, we will continue our study of Paul’s incredible letter to the Christians in Rome. In this sermon, we will examine Romans 13:1-14 under the heading: “The Behavior of a True Believer.”

The Just Shall Live by Faith
“The Behavior of a True Believer” Part Two
Romans 13:1-14

Wayne J. Edwards, Pastor

Review of Romans 12:3-21

1. The Believer and Himself or Herself –

  • Think accurately – we are but sinners, saved by grace.
  • Think spiritually – discover and USE the gift God has given to us.

2.  The Believer and Other Believers –

  • Love them sincerely – without hypocrisy
  • Love them fervently – with a sense of urgency
  • Love them patiently – be willing to extend to them the same grace God has given to us.

3.  The Believer and Unbelievers –

  • Witness genuinely – show them Jesus
  • Walk honestly – let our lives match our lips
  • Walk peaceably – in so far as it possible unto us, we are to LIVE at peace with everyone.

Romans 13:1-14

4. The Believer and the Government – 1-7

  • Submit respectfully – Government is ordained of God:
    • To promote good
    • To restrain evil
    • To provide benefits for the welfare of all mankind.

5.  The Believer and His Fellow Citizens – 8-10

  • Love honorably – love them as God loves us.
  • Love forbids adultery – any sexual activity outside of the bonds of marriage.
  • Love forbids killing – taking the life of another human being, except in self-defense.
  • Love forbids stealing – taking anything that doesn’t belong to us.
  • Love forbids bearing false witness – slander, gossip, rumor, etc.
  • Love forbids covetousness – desiring what others have, or resenting what they have that we don’t.

6.  The Believer and the Warning of Time – 11-14

  • Think urgently – if there are things we want to do before the rapture or the Lord calls us home, we need to do it NOW!
  • Live honestly – not complaining about the rise of sin and evil in others, but putting on the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives, and making no provision for the flesh.

Christians are to be the CONSCIENCE of our nation:

  • By the proclamation of God’s Holy Word with our lips –
  • By the demonstration of God’s Holy Word through our daily lives –
