Inspiration—Confession Scripture Reading—Psalm 51:1-4
These are the steps necessary for true salvation:
- In Psalm 51:1, the FIRST THING David asked God for was to have mercy on him.
- The basis of David’s plea before God was:
-
- According to thy loving kindness
- According to thy tender mercies
- There are four specific things that David asked God to do for him
-
- Verse 1: have mercy upon me, O God.
- Verse 1: blot out my transgressions
- Verse 2: wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity
- Verse 2: cleanse me from my sin
- Definitions:
-
- SIN—falling short of God’s glory of God’s desires for my life.
- INIQUITY—my involvement in things that do not please God.
- TRANSGRESSION—any disobedience to God’s laws
- Who knew of David’s sin?
-
- Verse 3: David did!
- Verse 4: God did!
Application—Repent (this step could require several hours, but don’t be hurried, for unless and until this step is completed, you will never make any spiritual progress)
- Take a sheet of paper , write out “subject names” of all known”
-
- Sin—those areas where you have fallen short of the glory of God.
- Iniquity—those activities you have been involved in that would not bring honor to God.
- Transgressions—any willful disobedience to God’s laws—murder, stealing, adultery, etc.
- Repeat the four things above that David asked God for—naming each sin as you pray, and then DESTROY the list.
- Memorize 1 John 1:9—“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
- Pray, thanking God for His forgiveness for your sin; asking Him to deliver you from the bondage of you sin nature. Ask a friend to pray this prayer with you and for you.
- As the evidence that you understand God’s forgiveness, remember to forgive those who trespass against you today.
