Inspiration—Confession                                           Scripture Reading—Psalm 51:5-9

  1. When we read verse 5 we find two things about the fall of man or “original sin” (See Ephesians 2:3)
    • We are born sinners—with a sin nature
    • Ephesian 2:3—we desire fleshly things
  1. In verse 6 there are two places that God desires truth and wisdom to be in our lives:
    • Thou desirest truth in the inward parts
    • Thou shalt make me know wisdom in the hidden part
  1. Read Exodus 12:21-28
    • The “hyssop” branch was dipped in blood
    • They were to strike it to the top of the door, and on both sides of the door. (Sign of the cross)
    • The only thing that can was away our sin is the blood of Jesus.
    • We must strike it to the doorway of our heart, so that our whole life is “covered by the blood”!
  1. Read Psalm 51:8—David was not happy living in sin! He was crying out that God would make him hear joy and gladness.
    • Read Jeremiah 16:17—we see that God sees all sin
  1. Read Psalm 51:8-9 again—David was feeling that God was on his back because the Holy Spirit was convicting him of the sins that he had committed.

Application—Repent

  1. Have you, in any way, tried to rationalize or justify or cover your sins by saying: “Well, I’m only human!” “Well, if they hadn’t done that to me!” “It wasn’t my fault!”
  2. There are eight basic steps to inward guilt which  can lead to discouragement, depression—even thoughts of suicide:
    • The Holy Spirit urged us to do God’s will—Philippians 2:13
    • We reject those urges as false conviction—1 Corinthians 2:14
    • Because they are opposite our natural thoughts—Galatians 5:17-18
    • We think they are insignificant—Luke 16:10
    • So the more we resist, the weaker the urges to obey—Ephesians 4:17-19
    • Yet God continually warns us of temptation—Matthew 26:41
    • Finally, the promptings are stopped—deadened by our own iniquity—Romans 1:21-24
    • The end result is guilt—and more repressed guilt—1 John 3:20
  1. The promptings of the Holy Spirit come to us by:
    • Personal Bible Study—
    • Personal Prayer Time—
    • Bible Teaching—Preaching—
    • Those in authority over us—

Application—Return

  1. Stop! Wait! What is God prompting you to do right now? Reject an evil thought?  Write a letter of apology, of thankfulness, or encouragement?  Pray for a friend?  Go to someone and ask for their forgiveness? Memorize Scripture?
  2. Cleanse your mind by clearing your house of anything that would not be God’s truth and would be revealed as sin to you. (horoscopes, wrong magazines, ungodly music, media, etc.)

PSALM 51:5-12

“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

My sin—oh the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part, but the whole!
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
