Inspiration—Repentance                                   Scripture Reading—Psalm 51:10-171

  1. David wanted a clean heart. But why?
    • Psalm 24:4-5—“He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul in vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation!”
    • Matthew 5:8—Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God!”
  1. Reread Psalm 51:10 and think of what the word “create” implies.
    • David knew his heart was filled with sin and disobedience to God. If he was ever to have a “right heart” with God, God would have to create a new heart within him!
    • Read Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
  1. In Psalm 51:11 there were two things David asked God NOT TO DO
    • Don’t cast me away from thy presence.”
    • Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me”
  1. In Psalm 51:12 there were two things that David asked God TO DO
    • Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation.”
    • Uphold me with thy free Spirit”
    • David is asking God for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit!
  1. When we read Psalm 51:13 we see the results of his willing spirit:
    • “Then I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.”
  1. In Psalm 51:14-15 we wee the result of his guilt being removed:
    • Verse 14—“My tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.”
    • Verse 15—“My mouth shall show forth thy praise.”

Application—Repent

  1. Ask God to give you a new heart for:
    • Personal, Private Prayer—
    • Personal, Private Bible Study—
    • Personal, Public witnessing—
  1. In your Bible, read Psalm 51:10-17 again and underline all the “Thy_________” in the passage. (Ex. “Thy presence”, “Thy salvation”, etc.)
  2. Are you willing to surrender you all unto the Lord? The evidence of a full surrender is:
    • A broken spirit—surrendering your will to God’s will
    • A contrite heart—a new desire and willingness to obey God
  1. As God to bring a person across your pathway who needs to know of His love.
