The Seed of the Savior
“The Eternal Throne”
2 Samuel 7:1-16
Wayne J. Edwards, Pastor
In Luke 1:30-33, the angel Gabriel told Mary, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
The annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ seems to start sooner and sooner. It is as though the people can’t wait for the Christmas season to begin, for it is the one thing that gives them hope beyond this weary world.
- However, how can we know that the Jesus born to Mary was the promised Seed of Eve; the Savior sent from God?
- If the Jesus born to Mary was not the Seed God promised to Eve, then the Jesus in whom we believe was a false Messiah, and our celebration of His birth is just another secular event.
- More importantly, if the Jesus we believe in was not the Seed of Eve, the Son of God, and the Seed of Mary, the Son of man, then He was not human and could not die as our substitute, nor holy and could not die for the sins of all mankind.
- The only way to confirm that the Jesus we believe in, and whose birth we will celebrate, is the Seed of Eve, is to trace that Seed forward from Eve to Mary and backward from Mary to Eve, as found in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.
- Both Matthew and Luke document Jesus’ birth, life, ministry, death on the cross, resurrection from the grave, ascension into heaven, and promise to return.
- In Luke’s 3rd chapter, the writer traces the lineage backward from Jesus to Adam, through David’s son Nathan, highlighting Jesus as fully human and connected to humanity.
- In the 1st chapter of Matthew’s gospel, the writer traces the lineage forward from Abraham to Jesus through King David’s son Solomon, and establishes Jesus in the kingly line, and legal heir to David’s throne.

THE MESSIANIC SEED
The Progressive Narrowing of Biblical Prophecy & Lineage

1. David’s Plan to Honor God – 2 Samuel 7:1-7 – VS. 2-3 – “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.” Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
- David questioned why he should live in a palace while the Ark of the Covenant, which represented God’s dwelling place, remained in a tent made of goat hair.
- Nathan, a prophet and a messenger from God, told David, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”
2. God’s Plan to Honor David – 2 Samuel 7:8-11 – Vs. 11 – “Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.”
- God said He had made David’s name great and had established David’s Kingdom for His purposes; not just for that day and time, not just for the next few generations, but forever.
- While Solomon would build the most beautiful temple in the world as a ‘House for God’s Name,’ God was building a dynastic house for David, one that would endure for eternity; world without end.
- This prophecy was partially fulfilled when Jesus was born; it will finally be fulfilled when Jesus returns as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
3. God’s Promises of the Davidic Covenant – 2 Samuel 7:12-16 – Vs. 12-13 – “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”
- God said He would raise up an heir from David’s body – an offspring of David’s lineage through whom He would establish His eternal kingdom.
- God said He would build a house for David’s name – in Matthew 16:18, Jesus said, “I will build my church,” directly echoing the promise of the builder-king.
- God said He would build an Eternal Throne – Dynasties rise and fall on the stage of human history, but David’s line carries a divine guarantee.
- God said He would establish a Father Son Relationship of everlasting and unfailing love – “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son… my steadfast love will not depart from him”
4. David’s Submission unto God – 2 Samuel 7:18-29 –Vs. 28-29 – “And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”
- David said, God’s words are true because the God behind them is true, and we can put our hope and trust in Him.
- God repeated the word “forever” three times regarding David’s house, David’s throne, and David’s Kingdom, meaning God’s promise was not fulfilled in any earthly kingdom, but in a King who would live forever.
- In Luke 1:32-33, when the angel Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus to Mary, he explicitly invoked the Davidic Covenant: “The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
- In Romans 1:3, the Apostle Paul said the gospel was concerning God’s Son, “Who was born of David, according to the flesh.”
- In Galatians 3:16, the Apostle Paul said, “The Seed is Christ!”
