Inspiration—Backsliding

Another term for backsliding is APOSTASY—the deliberate turning away from God’s truth and embracing a lie, or a false doctrine.  Satan tries to tempt us, as he did Eve, to doubt God’s Word, or to believe that it really doesn’t mean what it says it does.  Read the passages below and see if you can discern the reasons many ungrounded believers fall away from the truth.

  1. Acts 20:29-30—Paul warned his people about false teachers who rise up within the church—those who do not accept the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, and they lea people astray with their ideas, concepts and worldly philosophies. This agreement with the doctrines of THE FAITH.
  2. 2 Timothy 4:3-4—Paul warned Timothy about the members of the church who grow tired and weary of sound doctrine, who turned away from the truth and became interested in fables. (Harry Potter, Prayer of Jabez, The Shack, Blue Like Jazz, all the self-help books that focus on man’s need for self-esteem rather than repentance)
  3. Hebrews 4:1-11—Paul warned his readers about hearing the Word, but not rest in what they heard—doubting its power to do what it says it will do. In verse 11, he said those who continue this practice will end up in disobedience.
  4. Acts 7:51-60—The religious leaders did not desire to hear what Stephen was saying, because it did not conform with their concept of the faith.
  5. Acts 28:25-27—In verse 27, Paul said the heart of their problem was the problem of their heart—it had waxed gross, which meant it had become calloused to the truth. Their ears were dull of hearing, and they had closed their eyes to the truth.  Why?  Because they were afraid to be converted (saved).

Application—Repent

  1. There are multitudes of false teachers in THE CHURCH today.
Can you identify some of them? Do you listen to them?
  1. There are many “fables” being published today, totally contrary to the truth of Scripture. Have you read any of them?

Application—Return

  1. Remove any material from your home that is contrary to the Word of God, and purpose in your heart to listen only to those who preach and teach the who counsel of the Word of God.
